 1984 An airline is born.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, then-UAE Minister of Defence and a member of Dubai's progressive royal family, asked Sir Maurice Flanagan, then-Managing Director of dnata, to investigate the possibility of establishing an airline in 1984. A comprehensive business plan was completed by December of that year, and the name "Emirates" was chosen for the new airline.

Maurice Flanagan was given the ambitious task of launching an airline in 5 months with $10 million in seed funding in March 1985.The airline had to "look good, be good, and make money," he was told.
Under Dubai's open skies policy, there would be no subsidies or aeropolitical protection.

Emirates operated flights from Dubai to Karachi and Mumbai on October 25, 1985, using a Boeing 737 and an Airbus 300 B4 wetleased from Pakistan International Airlines.

A6-EKA flew from Toulouse to Dubai on July 3, 1987, as Emirates received its first owned aircraft, an Airbus A310-304.

Emirates expanded its network to 14 destinations in its first five years of operation.

1992 Setting a new standard.

Emirates pioneered in-flight entertainment by installing video systems in every seat, in every cabin class, across its entire fleet.
Dubai International Airport underwent a major renovation in 1992, and Emirates relocated to a new $2 million departure terminal.
 

Emirates' order for seven Boeing 777s, with seven options, signalled its ambitions and was a vote of confidence for the industry, which had been devastated by the first Gulf War.
 

Emirates is the first airline to offer telecommunications on all three classes of Airbus aircraft.Emirates is the first airline to equip its Airbus fleet with an in-flight fax service, allowing customers to stay in touch while flying.
Dubai International's new Terminal 2 opens, increasing capacity by 2 million passengers per year.



Passenger arrivals at Dubai International Airport have surpassed 11 million.


Emirates carried 4.7 million passengers on its fleet of 32 aircraft during that fiscal year (19992000).
 

By the millennium's turn, Emirates had expanded its global network to 50 destinations.

 2000 Sheikh Rashid Terminal opens.

The Sheikh Rashid Terminal opens, increasing Dubai International's capacity to 22 million passengers per year.At the Farnborough Air Show, Emirates becomes the first airline to order the Airbus A380, ordering seven with options for five more.
 

Over the next two decades, the world's largest commercial aircraft will serve as the flagship of Emirates' fleet.
 

Emirates signs a GBP100 million deal with English Premiership club Arsenal, including 15-year naming rights to its new stadium and eight-year shirt sponsorship beginning with the 2006/07 season.


This is the longest running shirt partnership in the Premier League, and one of the longest relationships in world sport, having been renewed in 2012 and 2018.

Emirates Flight Catering opens its new $120 million facility at Dubai International Airport.Within the first month of operation, the Emirates-dedicated Terminal 3 saw 500,000 passengers depart.
