The only underwater sinkhole on our list, it's also the most appealing because it's surrounded by an incredible reef and some of the world's best diving.While the Blue Hole did not endanger human life in the way that sinkholes on land frequently do, this gaping cave in the Caribbean Sea is still quite frightening. As the sinkhole reaches depths of 124 metres, the surrounding azure waters turn dark and foreboding blue.This, along with the Belize Barrier Reef, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Guatemala City sinkhole is the polar opposite of the stunning Great Blue Hole.
For starters, it smells like sewage because it is a man-made sinkhole rather than a natural wonder in Belize.This was also a deadly sinkhole, with one person killed and 1,000 people rescued from the collapsed rubble.Residents of Guatemala City, however, reported hearing rumblings for several days before the event.The sinkhole is approximately 20 metres across and 33 metres deep.

3 Xiaozhai Tiankeng Sinkhole, China

 

At the time of writing, Xiaozhai Tiankeng is the world's largest known sinkhole.
It is one of the world's scariest natural wonders because it is 662 metres deep and has vertical walls.However, the Chinese clearly saw it as something far more benign, as Xiaozhai Tiankeng translates as Sky Hole or Heavenly Pit.The Xiaozhai Tiankeng, like all sinkholes, was formed by Karst processes in carbonate rock, which is another way of describing water erosion.

4 The Berezniki Sinkhole, Russia

The Berezniki Sinkhole in Russia is a true monster, measuring over 200 metres deep and growing in size over time.Although no one was injured when the sinkhole occurred in 2007, it has some industrial implications.The Berezniki sinkhole threatens access to one of the world's largest mines of Potash, a type of salt used to make fertiliser, soap, and glass.If the sinkhole continues to grow, it could destroy the mine's only railway line.

 

5 Giant Sótanos, Mexico 

Giant Sótanos is located in the Mexican state of Querétaro.Giant Sótanos, famous for having the deepest freefall drop, is also a wildlife haven.Mexicans call the sinkhole Sótano de las Golondrinas, which translates to "Cave of Swallows."Giant Sótanos is 512 metres deep and opens up as you descend, with a base the size of three football fields.
